Fly fishing in New Caledonia means one thing… Big Bonefish (Albula Glossodonta)

Fly fishing in New Caledonia means one thing… Big Bonefish (Albula Glossodonta)
New Caledonia lies in the heart of the South Pacific and has arguably swimming around its shores the biggest bonefish in the world The fish weight average is around 8-9lbs. 10lbs bonefish are not rare.
Bones are not spotted in big school, but mostly swimming by 3 to 10.. Loners (singles) are often the biggest ones (9-13lbs). Kanaks fishing with hand lines or net caught monsters over 1m long and weight about 15-20lbs!

Bonefishing is guided, wading and/or from the boat (flat boat/skiff)

Fishing Gear

Fly fishing in New Caledonia means one thing… Big Bonefish (Albula Glossodonta)
Fishing gear should be adapted with weather conditions and fish power. It's often windy on the afternoon and 15kts wind gust is frequent.

Due to the wind and strong fish, we recommend to use a good brand fly fishing rod with very fast action : # 9wt or #10wt and a #12wt spare fishing rod for GT is a good idea.

A large arbor reel fitted with plenty of good brand backing (300 yards), an intermediate line's thinner profile will cut through the wind is the best and so use a short fluorocarbon leader (15-20lbs necessary when fighting hudge ones) that will be a great advantage in a strong wind.

Bonefish Flies : Christmas Island Special and Gotchas size #4. We have to say about the choice of "Pale pink in the sun and tan when the clouds come".

Polarized sun glasses – I recommend different colours of lens; "amber" is a good colour offering a good contrast to spot fishes on the bottom of the flats.

Wading boots with socks are a good idea. For information take care of stingrays ;there are many in big school during love period in September and October.
